From stonelists at gmail.com Fri Sep 1 14:34:19 2006 From: stonelists at gmail.com (Andrew Stone) Date: Sat Nov 4 02:09:34 2006 Subject: [Rails] Controllers and Namespaces (no problem, just questions) Message-ID: I'm a little late on finding this article: http://habtm.com/articles/2006/07/01/if-your-models-arent-namespaced-why-should-your-controllers-be-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-the-crud This idea does not sit well with me and am curious as to the Rails roadmap. I've seen a couple things demonstrated in examples (Rails Book, api) that later turn to become deprecated. As others have suggested, a resource for features/methodologies that are or will be deprecated would be a very nice addition. I personally don't agree with the current authorization examples (plugins, examples, etc..) I've seen and have written my own. Namespacing the controllers is an integral part of my authorization code. It allows me to easily group system functions and quickly check for access rights based on the namespace. There is no code that is peppered throughout my controllers to allow/deny access, but a single "secure controller" that checks the request and checks it against an array of allowed controller/actions. By default, everything is locked down unless I open it up. Being that my system is database centric, I can also manage rights via a couple of management screens without changing any code. I like my way and am getting the uneasy feeling that there is a growing anti-namespacing controller sentiment which could lead to discontinued support. If namespaces break plugins, then I say fix the plugins. Just become some plugins don't work well with namespaces I don't think it's fair to throw out a new mantra stating namespaces are bad. For the following statement: "if your models aren't namespaced , why should your controllers be?", well I respond by saying models don't contain business logic, controllers do. The duty of the model is to simply provide CRUD methods to your database. Controllers utilize these models to provide functionality as the business requires. I don't find myself violating the DRY principle with this approach, I use partials and lib files to keep it that way. In fact, putting some functionality into the lib directory has made it easy for me to utilize the same code in multiple projects. I would like to see what my fellow railers think of namespacing controllers and would also like to hear from some of the rails developers to see if this is really a problem or am I just being paranoid. thanks, andy -- Andrew Stone -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There are two tables that track the users on this site. One table 'Users' is basically the table for the salted_authentication generator. The next table, 'ForumMember' tracks each user's status in each forum. ForumMember contains a foreign key to Forum, and to User. I have a main page in which I list all the Forums that a user is a member of. I gather this data easily in my controller, with: def list @forums = Forum.find_by_user(@session['user'].id) end However, I wish to extend this page and display the user's status in the Forum on the corresponding line. The user's status is in ForumMember. I don't wish to do a SQL query for each forum on the list, so I want to prepare ahead of time by building a hash containing the corresponding ForumMember entries. I do this all the time in Perl.. I plan to index the hash to get the status as I iterate through the forums in the view. So I'm trying to do something like this: def list @forums = Forum.find_by_user(@session['user'].id) forummembers = ForumMember.find_by_userid(@session['user'].id) forummembers.each {|fm| @forummember[fm.forumid] = fm} @userid = @session['user'].id end But ruby won't let me use the '.each'. I'm hoping you will be able to follow what I'm trying to do here. Can anyone tell me why the each isn't working and how I can build my hash? I have started with an object model with three classes x, y and z (for brevity), where y < x and z < y. (I will want to extend this model further to subclass y with other classes.) I have created a table called x (plural) in the database with attributes for x, y and z and a type attribute. I then built a default scaffold application for x and added the subclasses y and z in the model x.rb. Using 'console (irb)' the behaviour is as expected, that is, z.create(...) - creates a row in the table x with the type = 'z' and the attributes of x, y, z set accordingly. This is not the case however when I use the scaffold-generated 'create' page. When using this to create rows in table x, the entered attributes (eg, x.a and z.b) are set correctly in the newly created table row but the 'type' is not set (to z). I assume I need to change either the controller or model to get the correct behaviour, and would appreciate some guidance as to how to approach this. Thanks in advance. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's frustrating.. Thanks. I am working on a site that has Forums. There are two tables that track the users on this site. One table 'Forum' has one entry per forum. The next table, 'ForumMember' tracks each user's status in each forum, if someone is a member of 10 forums, they have 10 ForumMember entries. Forum has_many ForumMembers, and ForumMember has_one Forum. So I'm trying to do something like this: def list @forums = Forum.find_by_user(@session['user'].id) forummembers = ForumMember.find_by_userid(@session['user'].id) forummembers.each {|fm| @forummember[fm.forumid] = fm} @userid = @session['user'].id end But Ruby tells me the method 'each' is missing! Can anyone tell me why? I thought the .find returned an array of objects, which should have the each method! Thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There has been a couple of blogs (one posted at weblog.rubyonrails.com"Things you shouldn't do in Rails") that are stating namespacing controllers are bad and that you should avoid using them. This idea does not sit well with me and am curious as to the Rails roadmap. I've seen a couple things demonstrated in examples (Rails Book, api) that later become deprecated. As others have suggested, a resource for features/methodologies that are or will be deprecated would be a very nice addition. I use controller namespacing and am getting the uneasy feeling that there is a growing anti-namespacing controller sentiment which could lead to discontinued support. To me, this would be very bad as my authorization code is built to take advantage of namespacing. For the following statement: "if your models aren't namespaced , why should your controllers be?" (from: http://tinyurl.com/p9odk ) , well I respond by saying models don't contain business logic, controllers do. The duty of the model is to simply provide CRUD methods to your database. Controllers utilize these models to provide functionality as the business requires. I don't find myself violating the DRY principle by namespacing controllers, I use partials and lib files to keep it that way. In fact, putting some functionality into the lib directory has made it easy for me to utilize the same code in multiple projects. I would like to see what my fellow railers think of namespacing controllers and would also like to hear from some of the rails developers. Is namespacing a real problem or just something some people think is bad design? thanks, andy p.s. I think I also something about has_and_belongs_to_many on the deprecation list in favor of has_many :though. I have developed a rails app with an existing legacy schema and now with changes in customer requirements, I need to change the schema. The legacy (schema) database has > 250K. What I would like to know is 1. Is it possible to migrate the data along with migrating the schema if use Migrations? If it is possible can somebody point me to an example, because in all the migrations tutorials that I see they have self.up (to create tables) and self.down (to drop tables) but what about data? 2. If I use migrations I will have to change my model classes, how can I minimize the pains of keeping my model classes in sync with schema changes specially when I am using A) 'set_primary_key' etc. B) rake migrate VERSION=xx 3. When I write my unit test for testing models, how do I keep my tests in sync with rake migrate VERSION=xx? Can I migrate my fixtures along with schema changes? 4. I will need a to keep my test: database in sync with migrations and I am assuming that rake would take care of migrating the schema in test database before running the tests. Is my assumption correct? TIA -daya -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have a drop-down box that allows the user to select a language. I want to use Ajax to render a filtered list of items based on the language selected. I don't want the user to press a Submit button nor refresh the page, of course. I'm using the standard collection_select in my view: <%= collection_select ('item', 'language_id', @languages, 'id', 'lang', {}, { :id => 'lang_select' } ) %> <%= observe_field( 'lang_select', %> This renders as follows: The problem is that the following are the params that Ajax is sending back to my controller when the user selects a different language: action: filter_by_language controller: items "2": "" As you can see, rather than the selected value (2 in this case) being attributed to a param, the param itself is named after the value. What I want it to be is something like this: "item[language_id]": "2" or "lang_select":"2" I could write a loop in the controller that checks for the existance of a parameter for each language_id, but that seems very ugly, so I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, but what I don't know. (Of course I could use a submit form and that would work too, but that would defeat the beauty of ajax.) Any help is appreciated. It also has a very good rewrite and proxy module built in as well as fcgi(which I haven't used yet but it is fast as well). It's kinda like pound in that it handles vhosts and reverse-proxy, but it has the extra capability of serving all your static files and rails page cached files directly. One of them seems to ignore :allow_nil => true. If I leave the phone input blank, I get it back with a "too short" error. Here's the relevant parts of the model: 1. class Address < ActiveRecord::Base 2. 3. validates_length_of :phone, :in => 7..10, :allow_nil => true 4. 5. before_validation :format_phone 6. 7. def format_phone 8. unless self.phone.nil? 9. self.phone.gsub!( /[^0-9#\*]/, '' ) 10. self.phone.gsub!( /^1/, '' ) 11. end 12. end 13. 14. end So, why isn't the model doing what it's supposed to? The SQL looks like this: SELECT DISTINCT e1.ip_address, loc.street, loc.city, loc.state FROM schema.net_element ne, schema.equipment e1, schema.equipment e2, schema.building b, schema.cust_loc cl, schema.location loc WHERE e2.equipment_id = e1.equipment_id AND e2.some_column like 'SOME_VAL%' AND e1.equipment_id = ne.net_element_id AND ne.class_name = 'FooBar' AND e1.building_id = b.building_id AND b.main_address = cl.cust_loc_id AND cl.location_id = loc.location_id So, I setup a class for the 'Location' table like this: class OracleLocation < ActiveRecord::Base establish_connection( :adapter => "oracle", :database => "our_db", :username => "user", :password => "password" ) set_table_name :location set_primary_key "location_id" end I can get a record back just fine: loc = OracleLocation.find_by_sql(sql).first p loc #"WA", "street"=>"1234 Block St", "city"=>"Smallville", "ip_address"=>"172.1.2.3"}> However, if I try to refer to an attribute, either directly or via the 'attributes' method, I get an error: p loc.attributes # Boom! There clearly *is* a location table, or the query wouldn't work in the first place. Also, the fact that I'm getting back an ORA-04043 indicates to me that, when I call loc.attributes, it's calling out to the database *again* for some reason. Why? Is this error caused by the fact that I'm doing a multi-table join here, but haven't actually mapped any of the other tables besides Location? What's going on?
